About

Sixth through eighth graders grow as scholars and global citizens at Rufus King International Middle School, an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School since 2013.

Through the IB Middle Years Programme, students learn about the world, and they develop the communication skills, confidence, and curiosity to make it better. They prepare for high school through an enriching curriculum that includes mathematics and English/Language Arts, Spanish, multicultural studies, and building tech skills (and robots) in our engineering lab.

Rufus King International Middle School teachers understand the adolescent years are a time of transition and growth for all students — that no two children learn the same way. We create hands-on experiences and instructional moments that teach core content and keep students engaged. Students learn music theory during drumline practice, perform at our Black History Celebration, and attend performances in Milwaukee’s arts district. They grow as artists and critical thinkers as they complete design challenges in our engineering lab, art projects, and during visits to museums and galleries.

Our Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports program celebrates students for contributing to a safe, supportive learning environment. Through our restorative practices framework, students feel comfortable asking questions and sharing feelings and observations knowing they will be heard. Students demonstrate their new skills and represent Rufus King International Middle School through sports, clubs, and student government. Families have a voice on our School Engagement Council and are welcome in our parent and family resource center.

Rufus King International Middle School uses the International Baccalaureate model to create rigorous academic educational experiences. We emphasize inquiry, critical thinking, and self-reflection through student centered learning. We develop innovative, principled, well-rounded, and insightful leaders who embrace diversity and contribute to the betterment of their local and global communities.

Vision

Rufus King International Middle School will empower all students to prepare them for the challenges of a diverse community, successfully transitioning them into a high school of choice. Using various assessments and data, we will create an environment with structures where staff, parents, and the community work together to lead Rufus King International Middle School to be high performing so that all students become 21st century learners who are proficient or advanced in all eight subject groups.
