Students who begin the program in middle school can complete the programme at Rufus King International High School during ninth and tenth grade. Freshmen do not need prior MYP experience to begin the programme at Rufus King.<\/p>\n<h2>MYP Curriculum<\/h2>\n<p>The MYP curriculum framework at Rufus King International High School\u202f:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Integrates IB Approaches to Learning (ATL) and Common Core academic standards.<\/li>\n<li>Provides a broad, balanced education that includes at least 50 hours of instruction\/year in eight subject areas: language acquisition, language and literature, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, arts, physical and health education, and design.<\/li>\n<li>Incorporates a Personal Project in tenth grade.<\/li>\n<li>Can be adapted to meet an individual student\u2019s needs and abilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Students who complete MYP coursework and Personal Project (tenth grade) are ideal candidates for our <a href=\"..\/ib-diploma-programme\/\">IB Diploma Programme (DP)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>MYP Personal Project<\/h2>\n<p>The MYP Personal Project encourages sophomore students to practice and strengthen their Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills: communication, research, self-management, social, and thinking. Over the course of the personal project, students connect classroom learning to personal experience and develop their own lifelong learning interests as they:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Participate in a sustained, self-directed inquiry within a global context,<\/li>\n<li>Generate creative new insights and develop deeper understanding through in-depth investigation,<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate the skills, attitudes and knowledge required to complete a project over an extended period of time\u2014including 25 hours of time outside of school,<\/li>\n<li>Communicate effectively in a variety of situations,<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate responsible action through, or as a result of, learning, and<\/li>\n<li>Appreciate the process of learning and take pride in their accomplishments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Families can join their MYP scholars to reflect on and celebrate this remarkable accomplishment during Rufus King International High School\u2019s annual personal project exhibition.<\/p>\n<h2>Global Context<\/h2>\n<p>Students in the IB programme learn best when their learning experiences have context and are connected to their lives and to the world they live in.<\/p>\n<p>Six IB global contexts help students understand concepts at a deeper level, and answer the question: \u201cWhy are we learning this?\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identities and relationships\u2014Who we are<\/li>\n<li>Orientation in space and time\u2014Where we are in place and time<\/li>\n<li>Personal and cultural expression\u2014How we express ourselves<\/li>\n<li>Scientific and technical innovation\u2014How the world works<\/li>\n<li>Globalization and sustainability\u2014How we organize ourselves<\/li>\n<li>Fairness and development\u2014Sharing the planet<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Grading\/Assessment Criteria<\/h2>\n<p>Milwaukee Public Schools has an online gradebook system (Campus) so parents and students can access grades. Continuous monitoring of student progress is available through <a href=\"..\/..\/families\/campus-parent-portal\/\">Campus Parent Portal<\/a>. Printed interim reports with comments and snapshot grades are sent to parents\/guardians every four to six weeks. Printed semester report cards are sent home in January and May. It provides a framework of learning which encourages students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers. The MYP emphasizes intellectual challenge, encouraging students to make connections between their studies in traditional subjects and to the real world. It fosters the development of skills for communication, intercultural understanding and global engagement, qualities that are essential for life in the 21st century.\r\n\r\nThe MYP is flexible enough to accommodate the demands of most national or local curriculums. It builds upon the knowledge, skills and attitudes developed in the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) and prepares students to meet the academic challenges of the IB Diploma Programme.\r\n<h2>The IB Middle Years Programme<\/h2>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>addresses students\u2019 intellectual, social, emotional and physical well-being<\/li>\r\n \t<li>enables students to understand and manage the complexities of our world, and provides them with the skills and attitudes they need in order to take responsible action for the future<\/li>\r\n \t<li>ensures breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding through the study of eight subject areas<\/li>\r\n \t<li>requires the study of at least two languages to support students in understanding\u00a0 their own culture and that of others<\/li>\r\n \t<li>provides the opportunity for students to undertake an independent project into an area of interest<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Curriculum<\/h2>\r\nThe IB Middle Years Programme consists of eight subject groups integrated through five interactive areas providing global contexts for learning.\r\n\r\nStudents are required to study two at least two languages (as part of their multilingual profile), humanities, sciences, mathematics, arts, physical education and technology.
