Activities

Starms Discovery Learning Center students can participate in extracurricular activities, clubs, and showcases focused on the arts, athletics, community service, and more.

Our teachers, coaches, and parent volunteers take extracurricular activities seriously because they help students explore career interests, develop new talents and skills, and make friends. Students who represent their school out in the community also get a taste of leadership experience and school pride!

Starms Discovery Learning Center extracurricular activities are listed below. Contact our parent coordinator, Betty Ferguson, or your child’s classroom teacher to learn more.

Arts & Entertainment

  • Arts @ Large: Many MPS sites participate in Arts @ Large, but Starms students have their own in-house kiln for pottery projects. Student artists also try their hands at painting, sculpture, music, and dance.

Athletics

  • Soccer: In partnership with the Milwaukee Kickers Soccer Club and Milwaukee Wave, America SCORES Milwaukee aims to inspire young people to lead healthy lives, be engaged students, and have the confidence and character to make a difference in their neighborhood and the world.
  • Basketball
  • Cheerleading
  • Flag football
  • Track

Career Exploration

  • Forensics: Starms DLC has an award-winning forensics team that inspires students to become confident critical thinkers, team workers, researchers, and public speakers. Participants learn to define and defend their values and opinions, respect those of others, and manage conflict and competition in healthy ways.
  • Robotics Club

Culture & Community Exploration

  • Kulinary Kids: Students develop basic cooking skills, learn about healthy food and meal planning, create dishes from other cultures and more.
  • Neighborhood House: Neighborhood House is a powerhouse provider of youth and cultural programming for many Milwaukeeans and a wonderful partner to Starms. Located just one mile from Starms ECC and Starms DLC, Neighborhood House welcomes students for science lessons and gardening projects. Environmental education continues during fields trips to the center’s 90-acre nature preserve in Neosho, Wisconsin.

Leadership & Service

  • Boy Scouts of America: MPS students participating in Boy Scouts of America belong to the youth development organization’s Three Harbors Council, which delivers Scouting programs to 5,000 youth in Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha counties. Locally and nationally, the BSA provides a program for young people that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of citizenship, and develops personal fitness.
  • Brother-to-Brother Initiative: In conversation with male mentors from the Starms community and beyond, older students receive guidance and support as they learn healthy strategies for dealing with change, building positive relationships, and developing ethical values and beliefs that can nurture them for a lifetime.
  • Life Skills Through the Art of Hip Hop: Through mentorship and tutoring, and by exploring real-world scenarios, students envision who they want to be and focus on creating habits and developing skills to achieve in the classroom (and beyond) in this after-school program.
  • The PEAK Initiative: PEAK Initiative fosters exploration and discovery for young people through experience-based learning and a long-term journey of character and leadership development that spans their entire school career. The PEAK Initiative approach to leadership development embraces best practices in social-emotional learning and experiential education, within and outside of their school environment, with proven results.
  • Student Council: When students lead as members of the Starms DLC Student Council, they find their voice, learn more about the school, and develop a deeper sense of responsibility, school pride, and connection with their peers.
  • Wellness Club: The Wellness Club meets after school to learn about and discuss healthy living, practice yoga and mindfulness, and explore other ways to embrace a healthy lifestyle.
