Stuart students complete the fifth grade prepared for middle school and ready to contribute to their new school communities with confidence and care.
Common Core State Standards
The curriculum in Milwaukee Public Schools is based on Common Core State Standards. These standards were developed with teachers, school administrators, and experts to prepare all children for college and the workforce.
Ambitious Instruction Plan
The Milwaukee Public Schools Ambitious Instruction Plan recognizes and celebrates that our students come from many cultures and backgrounds. This plan focuses on high-quality, culturally appropriate teaching and learning. Our goal is to ensure that every student masters reading, writing, and math skills in ways that are meaningful to their individual life and experiences. Our staff works together to understand each learner, find appropriate ways to assess and improve their progress, and make sure that students can apply what they have learned in productive ways in school and in their community.
Primary Years Programme (PYP)
The International Baccalaureate PYP for children ages 3 to 12 nurtures and develops young students as caring, active participants in a lifelong journey of learning.
Math
We use district-wide standards and assessments in every grade to help students accumulate mathematical knowledge and skills that prepare them for success in middle and high school.
Reading Language Arts
Teachers provide 90 minutes of high-quality reading, writing, and oral language instruction per school day. Through Act 20: Milwaukee Reads, students from K5 to third grade receive the evidence-based instruction, assessments, and personalized interventions they need to develop into proficient, confident readers.
Stuart School’s reading curriculum combines texts from diverse genres and cultures with new technology and online learning tools. Students develop critical thinking abilities and learn to express complex ideas in their own voice when writing, speaking, or performing.
Science and Social Studies
PYP philosophy innovates how we teach and learn all subjects; particularly science and social studies. Educators combine lessons and activities in these areas during IB-intensive integrated instruction blocks.
Transdisciplinary scholarship is true PYP. Our students make connections across subject areas. They use math, communication, and problem-solving skills when conducting science experiments, performing music, and solving design challenges in architecture lessons.
- Science
Students examine the scientific and physical processes that impact personal health and wellness and shape climates and economies worldwide. They reflect on their own responsibility to care for and share our planet’s resources. - Social Studies
Students read and research rich traditions, communities, and diverse histories past to present. Respecting all cultures and recognizing how relationships add meaning to our lives and build community are hallmarks of a PYP education. Students with these abilities are ready for service and success in an interconnected world.
Spanish
Stuart School offers Spanish as a world language from K4 through fifth grade. Students learn conversational Spanish and vocabulary in twice-weekly lessons. As students progress, they learn to speak, write, and understand phrases and sentences. They learn about Spanish-speaking nations and cultures in literacy and social studies lessons, and through the United Nations Schools of International Learning program for fourth and fifth graders.
Art, Music, and Physical Education
Art, music, and physical education, and social and emotional lessons help students grow into creative and well-rounded young people who understand mind and body wellness. Stuart students are learning to express themselves clearly and creatively to advocate for their well-being and build healthier communities local to global.
Special Education
Our teachers can adapt the flexible and inclusive PYP framework to meet a scholar’s unique needs and maximize their talents and abilities. Our special education teachers, regular education teachers, school social worker, school psychologist, and administration work together. Per IB, special education scholars can access the content, curriculum, and delivery of the IB program.
If you think your child has special education needs, ask your child’s teacher or principal for an evaluation. For questions about special education or specialized services, please call (414) 874-8493, or learn more about Specialized Services.
