The International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and the world beyond.
Students build a knowledge base and skillset that prepares them for middle school, high school, and life. IB attributes and skills encourage students to think about and respond to lessons and life experiences critically, thoughtfully, and creatively.
Children who think this way from an early age embrace learning as a lifelong process of self-discovery and community-building.
Programme of Inquiry
The PYP programme of inquiry is a school-wide learning map connecting IB learner profile attributes, Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills, transdisciplinary themes, and specified concepts to lessons and projects in all subjects. Students learn new material as they develop IB attributes like “knowledgeable” and “reflective.”
Stuart School educators design a programme of inquiry that balances structured lessons and hands-on projects with time for independent study. Students are encouraged to ask questions, find answers, and engage in research that inspires a lifelong love for learning.

PYP Students
Teachers guide students through a curriculum that encourages risk-taking, reflection, communication, and independence. Students develop their creative voice and vision in music and art classes. They explore the mind-body connection and strategize during physical education class. Studying Spanish helps them develop globally relevant communication skills and greater cultural competency.
At the end of the PYP journey, students apply skills and knowledge they have gained over time to research an issue or topic meaningful to them. The PYP Exhibition experience is more than a year-long research project. It’s a rite of passage and an opportunity for our fifth graders to affect change in the community.
PYP Parents
The International Baccalaureate maintains a small library of videos, brochures, frequently asked questions, and other resources that explain the PYP and other programmes. Parents and caregivers can learn more about our PYP curriculum during family nights and open houses.
Students who complete fifth grade at Stuart School can continue thinking globally and preparing for college and career in International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programmes (MYP) at three Milwaukee Public Schools.
