Programs

Supporting students’ academic performance, classroom engagement, college and career goals, and overall well-being are the focus of these programs at Gilbert Stuart School.

Forward Scholars

Forward Scholars supports kindergarten through third-grade students who need one-on-one support to reach grade-level benchmarks in reading proficiency. Volunteer tutors work with students twice per week. Site coordinators communicate regularly with Stuart School families and staff.

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

Milwaukee Public Schools uses PBIS to promote positive student behavior. After years of use, districts across the country, MPS included, are reporting increases in student achievement, more positive school environments, and fewer classroom disruptions and disciplinary referrals.

PBIS uses a three-tiered approach. Tier one teaches expectations to all students and promotes collaboration and consistency in the classroom: Teachers and students co-design agreements and routines that align with school expectations. Tiers two and three provide structure, interventions, and follow up for students who need more support.

Gifted and Talented

Through the U.S. Department of Education Jacob K. Javits Gifted and Talented Students Education Program Grant, Stuart School is increasing the representation of students from underrepresented backgrounds. Students receive individualized learning opportunities and support so they can reach their fullest potential.

United Nations Schools of International Learning

Students develop research, writing, and presentation skills while studying world affairs and current events in this landmark program, which offers a combined Model UN/World Studies curriculum to more than a dozen Milwaukee Public Schools. Fourth graders study nations that are UN member countries. Fifth graders participate in Model UN activities. Students in both grades attend the annual world fair.
