About

Designed for at-risk students ages 17 to 21, Transition High School is an alternative school that offers individualized, self-paced coursework with added support.

At Transition, we help students progress toward graduation and adulthood while accommodating responsibilities like community service, employment, or parenthood. Our staff members build a personalized education program for each and every student that is based on their individual needs, strengths, and challenges. We also provide support designed to help students with the transition to college, technical school, military service, or employment.

Program Structure

Transition’s program is structured in a half-day format to accommodate students who are completing community service hours, parenting, or working. Students are assigned either the morning or afternoon session depending on availability.

Eligibility and Enrollment

Students ages 17 and older apply at Transition and are accepted if they are at risk of not graduating from high school. We support students returning from expulsion or incarceration, as well as students who are experiencing challenges that include:

  • Being behind on credits and off-track for graduation
  • Missing school (poor attendance)
  • Being pregnant or raising a child

Definition of At-Risk Students

To be defined as “at-risk” under Wisconsin state law, students must meet two or more of the following criteria:

  • Are at least one year behind their age group in credits earned
  • Are at least two years behind their age group in basic skill levels
  • Are habitually truant (i.e. miss school for five or more days each semester)
  • Are (or will be) parents
  • Are adjudicated delinquents (i.e. minors who have been found by a court to have committed acts that would be considered crimes if committed by adults)

Applications are open year-round; if students meet the at-risk criteria, they can start immediately. Please note that session availability depends on enrollment and can change throughout the year.

School Expectations

As a student at Transition High School, you will need to:

  • Be able to work independently for extended hours on the computer. This involves being self-disciplined and becoming comfortable with educational technology, such as Edgenuity, Google Classroom, and IXL.
  • Show effort in completing coursework and making progress toward graduation.
