All Milwaukee Public Schools implement the Ambitious Instruction Plan and Common Core State Standards.
Common Core State Standards
The curriculum in Milwaukee Public Schools is based on Common Core State Standards. These standards were developed with teachers, school administrators, and experts to prepare all children for college and the workforce.
Ambitious Instruction Plan
The Milwaukee Public Schools Ambitious Instruction Plan recognizes and celebrates that our students come from many cultures and backgrounds. This plan focuses on high-quality, culturally appropriate teaching and learning. Our goal is to ensure that every student develops reading, writing, and math skills in ways that are meaningful to their individual life and experiences. Our staff works together to understand each learner, find the best ways to assess and improve their progress, and make sure that students can apply what they have learned in helpful ways in school and in their community.
Bilingual Education
The Escuela Vieau community proudly honors our school’s legacy as Milwaukee’s first bilingual school. From the 1960s to today, our school has welcomed students from Milwaukee, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and beyond. Today, 60 percent of Vieau students are learning English as their second language. Our school’s English as a Second Language (ESL) department is among the largest in Milwaukee Public Schools.
Escuela Vieau teachers implement the one-way Bilingual Dual Language model for Spanish-speaking students who are learning English.
- Bilingual English/Spanish: Students learn to comprehend, read, write, and speak English and Spanish proficiently.
- English Language Development: Students develop literacy and proficiency in their native language of Spanish, while receiving support from English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers as they work toward fluency and literacy in their second language.
Whether students are working toward biliteracy in a bilingual classroom or learning in a monolingual class (English), all Escuela Vieau students are empowered to think of themselves as global citizens who can change the world.
Reading/Language Arts
Literacy is a priority at Escuela Vieau. Through our Continuous School Improvement Plan, our focus is developing reading skills through explicit instruction. In K4 through fifth grade, teachers provide 90 minutes of reading, writing, and oral language instruction daily. In grades six through eight, students receive one hour of daily literacy instruction. Partnerships with Wisconsin Reading Corps and Forward Scholars provide targeted, one-on-one literacy support to students on an as-needed basis. Family Reading Nights and other school events encourage reading time at home.
Math
Preparing students for success in high-school mathematics is the ultimate goal of our math teachers, who use district-approved standards and assessments in each grade. Students build math knowledge, develop mathematical skills, and grow in confidence as they progress through the curriculum. Project-based math, science, and technology lessons are also embedded in our Project Lead The Way engineering curriculum. Eighth graders may enroll in high-school algebra classes to receive advanced instruction and earn high-school credits while still enrolled at Escuela Vieau.
Special Education
MPS serves all children with disabilities, including cognitive, physical, emotional, learning, hearing, vision, and speech disabilities. Escuela Vieau’s special education teachers, regular education teachers, school social worker, school psychologist, school support teacher, speech-language pathologists, and administration work together to meet students’ needs.
If you think your child has special education needs, ask your child’s teacher or principal for an evaluation. For general questions about special education or specialized services, please call (414) 874-8493, or learn more about Specialized Services.
