Programs

Supporting students’ academic performance, classroom engagement, college and career goals, and overall well-being are the focus of these evidence-based programs in place at Escuela Vieau:

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee

Students meet with volunteer mentors during a once-weekly lunchtime session. Through the support of their mentors, children develop positive attitudes toward school, achieve higher grades, become more confident, and improve relationships with adults and peers.

Danceworks Mad Hot Rhythm

Danceworks Mad Hot Rhythm inspires our students to move their bodies and work together to create performing art. Participation in Mad Hot Rhythm helps our students boost their self-confidence and creativity, respect and work well with others, and learn that creative movement feels great!

Forward Scholars

Forward Scholars supports kindergarten through third-grade students who need one-on-one support to reach grade-level benchmarks in reading proficiency. Vieau students and Forward tutors team up in the classroom two hours per week.

Hunger Task Force

During the school year program, Escuela Vieau fourth graders receive weekly lessons. Each lesson has three consistent components: a nutrition education lesson, a healthy cooking demonstration (with taste-testing!) and physical activity. School year program students also take bi-weekly field trips to the Hunger Task Force Farm during the growing season.

Junior Achievement of Wisconsin

We have a strong partnership with the Junior Achievement of Wisconsin program, which inspires and prepares young people to succeed in a global economy. Junior Achievement of Wisconsin provides activities, guides, thought leadership and other resources to support age-appropriate learning about leadership, jobs, money and more. Lessons are organized according to the Milwaukee Public Schools Social Studies curriculum and are implemented in K5 classrooms, continuing through eighth grade.

Project Lead The Way (PLTW)

Project Lead The Way is an innovative pre-engineering program that provides STEM certification (for teachers) and project-based math, science, and technology lessons (for students). Escuela Vieau’s PLTW program is possible through the generosity of Rockwell Automation. The goal of PLTW: Encouraging every child to explore the technology and engineering professions.

Urban Ecology Center

The Neighborhood Environmental Education Project (NEEP) engages classes through field trips to local green spaces that enrich the classroom curriculum. Urban Ecology Center educators engage students through hands-on activities, indoors and outdoors. Students may learn about local habitats, identifying plants, finding signs of animal life, or building forts with classmates! Rain or shine, snow or wind, every trip has a portion outdoors and is engaging for all students and parent chaperones. Urban Ecology Center has outerwear available to borrow so all participants may explore in any weather. There are three Urban Ecology Center locations; most schools partner with one less than two miles from their school.

Wisconsin Reading Corps

Tutors provide 100 minutes of one-on-one, weekly reading support to students who are working toward reading proficiency by the end of grade three and need extra help getting there. Tutors track reading progress and goals and work with reading coaches to provide support that is tailored to the individual student.
