Families

We believe real success happens when school, community, and family work together to provide the best environment and education possible for students at Washington High School of Information Technology.

We implement Milwaukee Public Schools Family & Community Engagement framework so families and staff can collaborate to support individual student achievement and overall school progress.

Family Resources

Through the Milwaukee Community Schools Partnership, Washington High School and our community partners offer services and programs that encourage family involvement and family and student well-being.

Parent Coordinator Von McDade (mcdadev@milwaukee.k12.wi.us) can answer questions about school events, our parent center, leadership councils, and more. Our parent center is open on school days by appointment.

Family Engagement and Events

School events are a wonderful opportunity to meet fellow Washington Purgolder families, our staff, and community partners. Popular events include Literacy Night, Father’s Assisting MPS, and meetings of our school leadership teams.

Families are partners and valued decision-makers whose voice and presence strengthen the Washington High School community. Please consider joining our Community School Leadership Team or helping to lead our Family Leadership Organization.

Volunteer

We are always looking for more caring, motivated individuals to work with our students. Please contact our parent coordinator to learn about volunteer opportunities at Washington or get started by completing the MPS volunteer application.

Community School Leadership Team (CSLT)

Community School Coordinator Markesha Hilliard runs our Community School Leadership Team, which meets at 10 a.m. on the third Thursday of each month.

Meetings of our Community School Leadership Team (CSLT) welcome all educators, families, community residents, students, partner organizations, and others invested in Washington. Together, we identify local strategies to best ensure student and school success.

CSLT meetings:

  • Bring all interested parties to the table
  • Offer diverse perspectives and address a wide range of issues
  • Inform key stakeholders about Washington High School partners and partnerships
  • Ensure collaboration as we work toward shared goals

District Advisory Council (DAC)

Families can stay informed on and share ideas about the district’s Title I programs and priorities during monthly council meetings. Each school sends two delegates to meetings; alternates may attend as well.

Family Leadership Organization (FLO)

Families participate in discussions and decision-making that puts our students’ needs first. Family Leadership Organization meetings are held at 2 p.m. on the third Thursday of every month unless otherwise noted.

Communicating with Washington High School

By communicating with the school, you’ll be up to date on your child’s progress. Please reach out any time there are concerns or changes that may affect your student(s).

  • Collect current school and teacher contact information at the beginning of each school year. You can gather this information from teacher handouts, during open-house events, or visit our staff directory.
  • Attend parent-teacher conferences. Students are proud to “show off” their school and feel supported when teachers and caregivers meet at a conference. If a scheduled conference time does not work for you, contact the teacher to choose a different time. Or schedule a virtual appointment or phone call with the teacher. Ask if your child should attend.

Supporting Your Student

Here are some tips you can follow at home to help ensure your child’s success at Washington High School of Information Technology.

  • Make attendance a priority. There is an undeniable link between a student’s attendance and their overall success. Call the school attendance line when your child will be absent: (414) 875-5900. We must be sure every student has arrived safely and follow up with any who are absent. We must also record absences correctly.
  • Make sure your child arrives at school on time every day. 8:00 a.m.
  • Set realistic expectations. It is always important to set standards to ensure that our children are working towards attaining a goal. Make sure that these standards are realistic and attainable. By setting expectations, we can hold our students accountable for their education.
  • Keep your child healthy. Make sure your child is getting enough rest and eating right. It is important that our students be prepared to take on their day. By caring for your child’s physical, emotional, and mental health, you are ensuring that your child is ready to succeed in school.
  • Ask for help. We understand that there are often obstacles that affect families. We are here to help. If you would like to talk to a school counselor, psychologist, or social worker, please reach out. Our goal is to collaborate with parents and families to build a strong support network for our students.
