Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

At Wedgewood Park International School, we focus on students’ academic progress and preparation for high school, as well as their personal growth and development.

Social and emotional lessons and behavior and attendance expectations are woven into our Middle Years Programme curriculum and school culture.

By building character, trust, and stronger communication and emotional regulation skills, students find their place in our interconnected world. Over time, they develop the sense of responsibility and self-confidence to make it better.

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

Students learn through positivity and consistency, so Wedgewood Park joins schools across MPS and the country in using the PBIS framework. Staff and students work together to identify, communicate, and reward behavior that makes our school a safe and welcoming space.

We use colorful signage, monthly award assemblies, daily announcements, and classroom conversations to make sure students know the expectations, understand why they are important, and how to meet them.

Wedgewood Park International School PBIS Expectations:

  • We are safe.
  • We are responsible.
  • We are respectful.

Students are acknowledged and rewarded for following PBIS best practices such as “no horseplay,” walking on the right side of the hallway, keeping the volume at “zero” during classroom transitions, and keeping their cafeteria clean.

Students suggest incentives and rewards that motivate them to action, and we build these into Wedgewood’s PBIS framework:

  • AttenDANCE (school dance)
  • End-of-year carnival
  • Extra gym or recess time
  • Friday dance breaks featuring student DJs
  • Game time on Chromebooks
  • Ice cream socials and pizza parties
  • Punch card for purchasing items at our school store

Staff adjust PBIS best practices and focus areas every month based on academic, attendance, and behavior data. Signs of success include an increase in student attendance and a decrease in behavior referrals in all grades.
