Students learn about the earth’s four systems – land, water, living things, and air – during standards-based STEM lessons at Westside Academy.
During project work and play in our redeveloped schoolyard, students develop a deep, hands-on understanding of how the earth’s systems interact, and human impact on the natural world.
Our redeveloped schoolyard, exciting earth-sciences curriculum, and cleaner greener campus are enhanced through a partnership with the environmental education nonprofit Reflo, and city and regional partners. A member of the Green Schools Consortium of Milwaukee, Westside Academy has:
- Replaced 31,400 square feet of asphalt with an outdoor classroom and rainwater harvesting system, trees and native grasses to absorb rainwater, and student signage that beautifies and explains our redeveloped schoolyard.
- Invested in students’ physical fitness by renovating Westside Academy basketball courts, soccer/kickball flex field, bicycle parking, and rest areas. New in 2023: gaga ball!
- Invited the visual and performing arts outdoors. Westside Academy Phoenix cheerleaders practice in the outdoor classroom. Arts @ Large created a vibrant mandala and constructed an artistic bench so students can savor inspiration and relaxation with their fresh air.
- Planted raised-bed gardens and a small orchard. Westside Academy produce is harvested by teachers, students, and families and shared during school and community events.
- Recharged the school’s Green Team and Garden Clubs.
