At Allen-Field School, we are proud to offer a bilingual dual language program that helps children grow academically while honoring their language, culture, and identity.
As part of the Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) Dual Language Program, our goal is to help students become confident, successful learners who are literate and academically strong in both Spanish and English.
Building Strong Foundations in Two Languages
Our bilingual program supports students in developing skills in their first language (Spanish) while they learn English. Research shows that strong skills in a child’s home language help support success in a second language—and we see that every day in our classrooms.
In kindergarten and first grade, instruction is primarily in Spanish to build strong literacy and academic foundations. Beginning in second grade, students receive more formal English reading instruction while continuing to strengthen their Spanish skills. Throughout the program, students develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in both languages.
Our classrooms focus on:
- Strong literacy development in Spanish and English
- Academic excellence in all core subjects
- Speaking and listening skills that build confidence
- Appreciation for Hispanic language and culture
Students are held to the same high academic expectations as those in our traditional monolingual program, and we provide the support they need to meet those goals.
Supporting English Learners
Our program ensures that English language learners (ELLs) become fluent and literate in English while also maintaining and strengthening their Spanish language skills. English as a Second Language (ESL) services are integrated into instruction to support listening, speaking, reading, and writing development.
Partnering with Families
Family involvement is one of the most important parts of our program’s success. We value open communication and partnership with parents and guardians. Together, we celebrate student growth, support areas for improvement, and encourage a love of learning at home and at school.
We encourage families to:
- Read with children in either language.
- Maintain and celebrate the home language.
- Stay connected with teachers about students’ academic progress.
Continuing the Journey
After completing the program at Allen-Field, students can continue their dual language education within MPS at the middle and high school levels. Learn more about the available schools, and contact our office at (414) 902-9200 for more information.
