Major changes are coming to Douglas! Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, our building is being converted into a K–8 school to better serve the community. We will initially operate as a single-section K–8 program (one class per grade level), with plans to expand to a two-section model as enrollment grows. Our first and second floors will be reconfigured to support elementary programming, while the third floor will be reserved for district emergency overflow use.

The district’s investment in our school focuses on early childhood education while enhancing the educational experience for students across all grade levels. This reflects district priorities to increase enrollment, improve student outcomes, and provide safe, welcoming, and age-appropriate learning environments.

Through collaboration with stakeholders, community members, students, and staff, MPS identified priorities and planned key improvements. These include:

• Exterior improvements, including a new fenced-in kindergarten play area, increased lighting, security camera updates, and sidewalk improvements
• Remodeling to create four kindergarten classrooms with dedicated bathrooms, coatrooms, and a flexible intervention space that also serves as a sensory room to support students who need help with self-regulation
• Updates to the main entrance vestibule and lobby to create the welcoming feel of an elementary school
• Renovation of existing spaces into a before- and after-school care center, donation store, music area, parent center, and professional development space
• Gymnasium renovations, including new lighting, height-adjustable basketball hoops, and acoustic wall panels
• Library renovations to create an elementary environment with colorful finishes and new furniture, bookshelf “islands,” updated lighting, and a nearby makerspace

Design of the project is complete, and final construction documents have been prepared. Work will be happening this summer with the goal of having all work completed in time for the start of the 2026–27 school year.
