Programs

Supporting students’ academic performance, classroom engagement, college and career goals, and overall well-being are the focus of these evidence-based programs in place at Forest Home Avenue School:

Achievement Gap Reduction (AGR) Program

The AGR program provides intensive academic and instructional support to Wisconsin schools working to close the achievement gap between kindergarten through third-grade students from low-income backgrounds and students in the same grade and subject statewide. Schools that receive AGR funding implement key strategies in their kindergarten through third-grade classrooms:

  • Small class sizes of 18:1 or 30:2
  • One−to−one tutoring provided by a licensed teacher
  • Instructional coaching for teachers provided by a licensed teacher.

Forward Scholars

Forward Scholars supports kindergarten through third-grade students who need one-on-one support to reach grade-level benchmarks in reading proficiency. Forest Home students and Forward tutors team up in the classroom two hours per week.

Junior Achievement of Wisconsin

We have a strong partnership with the Junior Achievement of Wisconsin program, which inspires and prepares young people to succeed in a global economy. Junior Achievement of Wisconsin provides activities, guides, field trips, and other resources to share lessons on leadership, career preparation, money management, and more. Lessons are organized according to the Milwaukee Public Schools Social Studies curriculum and are implemented in K5 classrooms, continuing through fifth grade.

LibraryCorps Program

The Milwaukee Public Library LibraryCorps Program helps young people develop a love of reading, increase information literacy skills, and establish relationships that bridge the gap between in- and out-of-school learning. We help Milwaukee students develop 21st-century skills and connect with library resources to cultivate a city of lifelong learners.

LibraryCorps mentors visit Forest Home Avenue School on Thursdays to share the power of literacy during lessons curated especially for fourth and fifth graders.

Project Lead The Way (PLTW)

Project Lead The Way supports our teachers in incorporating project-based math, science, and technology learning, and encourages every child to explore — and believe they can succeed in — jobs in technology and engineering fields. Learn more at mpsmke.com/pltw.

SHARP Literacy

SHARP Literacy energizes urban school children to become confident, capable readers, writers and researchers, using the visual arts to engage young minds and reinforce learning. Providing them with opportunities to develop a wide range of skills – reading, writing, oral communications, research, creative thinking and problem solving – SHARP creates a solid foundation for future learning and success. On pre-and post-vocabulary tests, SHARP students improve their literacy skills between 40 and 70 percent.

We Energies STEM Center at MSOE

Students visit the Milwaukee School of Engineering to engage in hands-on STEM projects and meet role models whose expertise and experience are a perfect fit for Forest Home’s STEM-focused academic program.

Wisconsin Reading Corps

Tutors provide 100 minutes of one-on-one, weekly reading support to students who are working toward reading proficiency by the end of grade three and need extra help getting there. Tutors track reading progress and goals and work with reading coaches to provide support that is tailored to the individual student.
