About

James E. Groppi High School is an alternative high school that is designed to meet the needs of at-risk students ages 17½ to 20.

At Groppi, we create a personalized pathway to graduation for every student that begins the moment they arrive on campus. Students may choose to graduate from Groppi or, once they’ve recovered credits, return to their previous high school. Depending on their goals and dedication, many complete their requirements in as little as nine months.

Our small class sizes make individualized support possible, and our experienced staff are fully licensed in alternative education—unlike most schools, where only one teacher may hold this credential. This additional training, which includes college-level certification courses, ensures that every Groppi educator is equipped to guide at-risk students through alternative pathways to success.

Beyond academics, our staff are trained to support students holistically. Restorative practices are central to our school culture and are reinforced by everyone on campus—from the physical education teacher, a licensed yoga instructor who integrates mindfulness practices, to our school social worker, who helps students build the life skills they need to thrive.

School Hours

Morning Session:
8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Afternoon Session:
12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

At Groppi, we don’t just prepare students to earn a diploma—we empower them to move forward with confidence, resilience, and a vision for their future.

Program Structure

Groppi’s program is structured in a half-day format. Students are assigned either the morning or afternoon session according to enrollment space and course availability. Each session includes three one-hour class periods, and students have access to hot lunches.

The school year is made up of four nine-week “semesters,” which allow students to take more classes and recover credits more quickly. Student schedules can change from semester to semester according to their needs.

Campus

We invite you to visit the Groppi campus and see what we’re all about. Our fitness center, library/media center, and science lab were renovated in 2024, and each classroom boasts new furniture. Student artwork is displayed throughout the building, and our student-created mural shines on 27th Street. From the moment you walk through our doors, you’ll experience a community built on commitment, creativity, and pride.
