James E. Groppi High School is an alternative high school that offers continuous enrollment for at-risk students.
Eligibility
We support students ages 17½ to 20 who are experiencing challenges that put them at risk for not graduating. This includes students who are returning from expulsion or incarceration.
Definition of At-Risk Students
To be defined as “at-risk” under Wisconsin state law, students must meet two or more of the following criteria:
- Are at least one year behind their age group in credits earned
- Are at least two years behind their age group in basic skill levels
- Are habitually truant (i.e. miss school for five or more days each semester)
- Are (or will be) parents
- Are adjudicated delinquents (i.e. minors who have been found by a court to have committed acts that would be considered crimes if committed by adults)
Enrollment Process
Groppi offers continuous enrollment throughout the school year. If students meet the at-risk criteria outlined above, they can start at Groppi immediately after completing the initial enrollment meeting.
Enrollment Meeting
This 45-minute in-person meeting includes the student, parent/guardian, and principal. Groppi’s principal is available for meetings daily from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and walk-ins are always welcome—no appointment needed.
Note: Students transferring from non-MPS schools should bring official transcripts from all previously attended high schools.
