About

At Hayes Bilingual School, our 600+ students thrive in many roles, from kindergarten scientists to middle-school scholars winning citywide STEM contests.

Hayes students are bilingual learners, meeting academic expectations in Spanish and English. They fabricate and innovate in our school engineering laboratories and join FIRST LEGO League and Cientificas programs for after-school STEM studies. Hayes students are dancers, performing with our Danza Folclórica troupe at celebrations like the MPS United Nations World Fair and Cantos de las Américas. Licensed and certified bilingual teachers lead our K8 students through a curriculum based on state standards, focused on biliteracy, and informed by culturally responsive programs like First Nations Studies. The Hayes Bilingual School graduate is proud of their accomplishments, and prepared to succeed at partner high schools like Rufus King IB, Reagan, Milwaukee School of Languages, and South Division.

Hayes Bilingual School is all about “Familia” – the word printed on our official tee shirt. Principal Gabriel Lopez Jauregui gives them to new volunteers and wears one himself. Parents and engineering mentors, literacy volunteers, and coaches share a commitment to maintaining a welcoming, safe, structured learning community. Parents and caregivers are regulars at Hayes, volunteering in classrooms and joining the School Engagement Council. Some classroom teachers are Hayes alumni and parents; cousin and sibling groups are common within our school population. We invite our southside neighbors to Hispanic Heritage Month and holiday celebrations that showcase student creativity and our school’s cultural diversity. Evenings and weekends, our redeveloped schoolyard is open to the neighborhood – including a turf soccer field, play structure, and outdoor classrooms. During school days, Hayes students play and learn there as athletes, gardeners, and environmental scientists.
