This month we are spotlighting: Balanced: We understand the importance of balancing different aspects of our lives—intellectual, physical, and emotional—to achieve well-being for ourselves and others. We recognize our interdependence with other people and with the world in which we live. Dennis Young, 11th grade, was voted this month as a student that has shown what it takes to be balanced. He is involved in sports year-round, works a job, and maintains good grades, all while having an internship with We-Energies and an apprenticeship with MPS Trades, both of which required a tremendous amount of leg work to even get accepted. Regarding interdependence, Dennis realizes that he can’t do everything on his own and has routinely reached out for support navigating all of his commitments. Lastly, while doing all of this, he is reliable, responsible, and responds to emails in a very timely fashion!!! Congrats Dennis!!

The 7-12th grade students and staff will be hosting our IB Showcase. Our IB students will be showcasing their 7/8th grade Community Project, 9th grade Design Projects, 10th grade Personal Projects, the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th grade Cross-curricular projects, MacDowell Music Project, and our Specials(Spanish, PE, Art). Upon arrival, a staff member will greet you with a map of the locations of these showcases!!
Clickable Links Staff Emails Grading/Assessment MYP Objectives and Strands	2nd Annual Community Day Community Day is a day intended to be centered in a community service opportunity and/or an activity which would be educational in a way which would directly contribute to students acquiring knowledge and perspectives which would enable them to better serve their community. This day also aligns with IB’s foundational element of Service as Action, which seeks to develop caring members of the community who act to make a positive difference to the lives of others and their environment.
	This year’s community day activities include: Poster Making, Gardening, Cheer Room Renovation, Textbook Inventory, Cleanup of Exterior Grounds, Blanket Making for Humane Society, School Beautification, Wall Painting, Parks and Trail Cleanup, Community Garden Cleanup, Black Holocaust Museum, Lakeshore State Park, Guest House Sandwich Prep, Father Gene’s Donation Sorting, Invasive Species Cleanup, Rescue Mission, and Hank Aaron Trail Cleanup
	MacDowell Vision Statement Students will leave MacDowell ready to pursue their Great Work. They will be ready to pursue this work in College and career training without remediation.

MacDowell Calendar

~ Community Day for Middle and High School students, May 5th, 9:30 AM- 1:00 PM, various locations. Community Day will be followed by a school-wide lunch provided and a discussion and written reflection on the day’s work. *Permission slips are required for all off-site events. Please check in with your student re: their chosen Community Day activity.

~Spring Open House and Ice Cream Social, (K-12 EVENT) Thursday May 4th,  5-7 PM. Enjoy visiting with your child’s teachers and viewing student work, then join us for a bowl of ice cream and fellowship in the school cafeteria.

MPS RUN/WALK BACK TO SCHOOL REGISTRATION IS OPEN!

(You don’t have to Run to join our team!)

Celebrate the start of the 2023-24 school year with MPS and Milwaukee Recreation at the 16th annual MPS Run Back to School! This is an annual tradition for MacDowell families and a wonderful way to get together and enjoy a beautiful walk/run through the Washington Park neighborhood.

If we have the most registered participants, we are eligible for a $1,000 grant towards recreation/wellness programs. Let’s do this, MacDowell!

DETAILS:

• 5K run/1.5-mile walk through Washington Park
• Date: Saturday, Aug. 26
• Start Time: 9 a.m. (please arrive no later than 8:40 a.m.)
• Start & Finish Line: Wick Playfield 5225 W. Vliet St.)

If our school’s team has a minimum of 25 participants by July 31, we will be able to walk/run in our very own team t-shirt color. In addition, we will be eligible for a $500 grant to go towards a recreation and/or wellness need at MacDowell! If we have the most registered participants, we are eligible for a $1,000 grant towards recreation/wellness programs. Let’s do this, MacDowell!

APEX Middle and High School Fundraiser: NOW THROUGH MAY 5th

Our APEX fundraiser is an ANYTHON, which will be tied to the Community Day of Service for all students on May 5th, 2023.

Students are asking for donations from their friends and family and the greater community to sponsor them for their Community Day activity. Friends and family can contribute to support the student doing good work in the community and funds will be used to support enrichment experiences at the school level. MacDowell will use these funds to pay for transportation to their community day projects as well as support other middle and high school initiatives such as occupations, field trips and special events.

The Open House is an opportunity for all families to get a glimpse into the classrooms and for children to guide their family through a few special lessons. Students will be encouraged to present work(s) to their family. It could be something that they recently completed and are proud of, or it could be their favorite material. Our 7th-12th grade students will be showcasing their Personal Projects, Community Projects, IB Design Projects, Theory of Knowledge projects and cross curricular projects.

-ARTS @ LARGE ARTS SUMMER CAMP 2023 ENTERING GRADE 3 – 8 (FREE)

Arts @ Large Arts Summer Camp is back again this summer!

Campers will be exploring multiple arts mediums, mental health practices, and careers in the arts . Campers will stretch the boundaries of the learning process and become immersed in creative flows of various art forms, such as Visual Art, Dance, Voice, Theater, Comedy, Piano, Songwriting, and Drums. You are able to sign your child or children up for FREE, and campers will be provided with breakfast and lunch.

This year, we are accepting 60 campers total. Each camper will participate in all 8 classes offered over the 5-week session. With limited capacity we ask that your camper be available for no less than 17 of the 19 sessions. Consideration and acceptance for camp is on a first come – first serve basis of application submission.

Camp begins on Monday June 26th, 2023 at 8:00 am and will conclude on Thursday July 27th, 2023 (note: There will be no camp on Tuesday July 4th, 2023) 

– Activities are held 8:00AM – 1:15 PM on Monday, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays

-UWM COLLEGE FOR KIDS & TEENS SUMMER PROGRAM: (FEE BASED, SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE)) Looking to keep the kids busy over summer? Want to keep their learning processes sharp? The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee offers exciting hands-on learning experiences in math, science, fine arts and humanities for students in K5 through high school. Prices vary and a limited number of scholarships are available!

CHESS INFO

Our Saturday Virtual Chess Tournaments are still going on! Students meet virtually on Chesskid.com weekly. The tournament starts at 5PM sharp. Students “join” the tournament 15 minutes before the start time via their Chesskid accounts. Pairing is automatic and their fast chess ratings are used for pairing purposes.    This tournament is open to any MacDowell student. Trophies and medals will be awarded at the end. MPS NEWS

STRATEGIC PLAN FOR THE 2023-2028 SCHOOL YEARS

If you would like to learn more about the findings and the draft of the Strategic Plan that will guide Milwaukee Public Schools improvements in the next five years, the district will hold five community feedback sessions next month. All sessions are open to MPS staff and members of the public. You will have an opportunity to weigh in and provide feedback prior to finalization of the plan. We look forward to your participation.

• Thursday, April 27: For Districts 6 and 8 — 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Manitoba School, 4040 W. Forest Home Avenue
• Saturday, April 29: For District 4 and At Large — 9 to 11 a.m. in the Central Services Auditorium, 5225 W. Vliet Street

Feedback from the meetings will help inform the new MPS Strategic Plan, which will include annual performance targets after launching in July.
