MPS Referendum Will Go to Voters in April 2 Election
On January 11, 2024, the Milwaukee Board of School Directors approved a plan set forth by MPS administration to place a referendum on the April 2, 2024 spring election ballot.
MPS’ plan would secure as many resources as possible for students while being mindful of taxpayers.

~Since 2009, Wisconsin public school funding has not kept pace with inflation. For this reason, public schools across the state are facing budget challenges.

February is Black History Month! The origin of African American history month can be attributed to a week-long celebration created in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who hoped to raise awareness of the history and contributions of African Americans to civilization. It became a month-long celebration in 1976. However, over the past ninety-five years, America has come to realize that Black history is American history.
Milwaukee Public Library Black History Month Resources
The Milwaukee Public Library has resources and ideas for books, e-books, audiobooks, e-audiobooks on Black history, stories, life and culture for every age group as well as fun activities and events.
MPS Black Lives Matter Week of Action is February 5-9
The Milwaukee community will have opportunities to listen, learn, and add their voices to the Black Lives Matter (BLM) narrative to bring about positive change. Leading off Black History Month in February, Black Lives Matter Week of Action is designed to engage the community in topics related to the principles of Black Lives Matter.
The theme of the Week of Action is “A Lifetime of Practice, with Power in Our Voice and Action in Our Steps.” Evening events are free and open to the public. The mission of Black Lives Matter is to decrease racial and social disparities by activating our voice, sparking action in our steps, ensuring that equitable practices exist, and uniting humanity for a better tomorrow.

IB Update
January Learner Profile of the Month
There are 10 learner profile traits which describe a broad range of human capacities and responsibilities that go beyond academic success.
This month we are spotlighting: Open-Minded: Students that are open-minded critically appreciate their own cultures and personal histories, as well as the values and traditions of others. They seek and evaluate a range of points of view, and they are willing to grow from the experience.
Tioluwalase Oni, 9th grade, was voted this month by MacDowell Staff as a student that has shown what it takes to be Open-Minded. Tioluwalase is a new student at MacDowell, having moved here from Nigeria. This young man has been so positive: open to building relationships, getting to know others, learning about his new school/city/country, and also has shown mature reflection in considering how his own culture and personal history intersects with his current status and life situation of being in an entirely new environment. He has jumped into new experiences wholeheartedly, such as joining the basketball team, has continued to reach out for other ways to be involved and gain new experiences, and I have been impressed with his ability to look at situations from a variety of perspectives. This young man has truly been impressive in his open-minded attitude since joining our school community.
Congratulations Lase!!
