MILWAUKEE MAKERS FUNDRAISER
~We are thrilled to announce that MacDowell Montessori is partnering with the locally run Milwaukee Maker School Fundraiser to bring you an opportunity to shop locally this holiday season while also giving back to the efforts and initiatives of our PTO. This initiative is designed to support our school while celebrating creativity, innovation and community spirit.
The fundraiser features a variety of local makers and artisans offering unique products that are perfect for everyone on your holiday shopping list through a single e-commerce fundraising website. By participating, you’ll not only find fantastic items, but also contribute directly to our school programs and resources. 40% of every purchase will be donated back to the school, and these funds will help us reimburse teacher funds, provide field trip transportation, contribute to swim lesson costs, prom, social events and more.
Families will find a direct link and QR code on our FB page on the morning of October 14th when the fundraiser officially goes live (Oct 14-Nov 3). The sales webpage will be shared in next week’s newsletter after sales have begun. We encourage you to share this link with family, friends and neighbors who might also be interested in shopping local while supporting our school – even if they are out of town, orders can be shipped. Pick-up orders will be ready the first week of December at the school.
Start making your gift idea list now! Thank you!

WIAA SURVEY
The WIAA Calendar and Contact Ad Hoc Committee is evaluating Coaching Contact days during the offseason of athletics. According to the WIAA High School bylaws, “There shall be no restrictions upon schools, school teams and school coaches (grades 9-12) relative to assembling in the summertime, for up to 5 days, which do not need to be consecutive (all WIAA sports sponsored by the school). Sanctioned school contact days must conclude no later than July 31.”
The committee seeks feedback from several constituent groups, including parents/guardians, regarding potential changes to the rule above.
Parents/Guardians of high school student-athletes are asked to participate in an anonymous survey. https://fs20.formsite.com/jfdonova/WIAAContactSurvey/index
The survey will be open through October 11, 2024, and will take no more than 10 minutes to complete.
Thank you in advance for your time and participation! ~Ms. Schenk, Athletic Director

General Reminders
COLDER WEATHER: As the season has turned colder, please remember that younger students should have spare clothing for colder weather in their backpack/bookbag. If you have not already done so, now is the time to replace their clothing with warmer weather attire. Please label items.
LOST AND FOUND: Please check the lost and found when you are in the building. Please label items! Light jackets and hoodies are often a large part of our lost and found – labeling these items will help us return lost items to their owner. MacDowell Spotlight
UPPER ELEMENTARY – LAKESHORE PARK
Some of MacDowell 4th-6th grade students took two different field trips to Lakeshore Park this past month. The first one was to enhance the biodiversity studies we do inside the classroom. Lakeshore State Park offers a variety of activities for school groups, taught by the DNR naturalists. This year we did:
Hooked on Fish – We learned about Lake Michigan fish and their roles in the web of connections between living things in and around the Lake. We discovered how the non-native newcomers are changing these close-knit communities. And we caught some fish – catch and release.
Fire Safety – we made a fire on the beach, but not before learning about how to build it and what safety measures to take.
Prairie Prawl – We learned about prairies and the organisms that call them home. The naturalists engaged students in discussions about the great diversity of species living on the prairie, the history of land use in our area, and prairie restoration. We collected seeds to take home.
The second trip was with CanoeMobile. Canoemobile travels around the country so that a diverse array of students have the chance to experience the nation’s best outdoor field trip. CanoeMobile brings classroom learning outside, engaging youth to improve school performance, cultivate a stewardship ethic, and create pathways to pursue educational and career opportunities in the outdoors.

YOU CAN GET A WISCONSIN STATE ID CARD FOR FREE
To get a free ID card, you will need to take a few documents to your Division of Motor Vehicles office.
There’s a long list of documents you can use below, but most people will be fine with a certified birth certificate, a Social Security card and a utility bill or cell phone bill. You’ll notice that some records, like a certified birth certificate, satisfy more than one category.
Just be sure to bring originals — photocopies don’t work — and check the box that says “ID for Free” on your application. Once it’s complete, you’ll get a receipt that you can use at the polls until your state ID arrives by mail.
