Economic Geography & Currency

Economic Geography is an elementary work that focuses on the interplay of physical geography and natural resources, political geography, and the meeting of human needs. The work itself is the creation of maps with stamps identifying different natural resources (animal resources, plant resources, and mineral resources) and where they are sourced within continents, nations, and states.

At higher levels it can be used as a work in data analysis and to explore global trade, imports and exports; how people in one place get resources that might not otherwise be available in that region (avocados are delicious, but are not naturally found in Wisconsin). Tied in with this work is an exploration of currency, and the mathematics of money.

Ways to support this work at home

  • have child tally the cost of groceries as you shop
  • have them pay the cashier (if paying in cash)
  • conversations about what credit cards are (if not paying with cash)
  • Ask to discover the origin of all the purchased groceries
    • note if they are domestically produced
    • what state
    • internationally sourced and imported
    • (LIST MAKING!!!)

Simple tasks like counting money, and complex conversations around the global food (and goods) market, not only support life skills, but broaden the scope of your child’s vision and global understanding, as well as the fundamental interconnectedness and interdependence we all share.

MacDowell  Spotlight

LOWER ELEMENTARY – FOODRIGHT

MacDowell Lower Elementary classes culminated in the 3rd graders’ lessons of mapping maples (in fall) and tapping maples (in spring) with a pancake recipe. A few students from each class helped prepare whole wheat pancakes and enjoyed serving to their classmates. Syrup from the sap collected outside topped the pancakes. As the trees tapped were not sugar maples the coloring of syrup is a light golden, much lighter and less sweet than store bought or sap harvested from sugar maples.

AUTHOR VISIT – TONY WEAVER

MacDowell high school students received a special visit from Tony Weaver, Jr. last week in the library. Tony Weaver, Jr. is the author of Weirdo, his graphic novel memoir, about self-acceptance and finding the superhero within yourself. He talked with students about finding ways to share their own stories and encouraged them to read widely across genres and literary types. He spent time afterward signing books, answering students’ questions, and posing for selfies with them!
