Middle and High School Updates
IB LEARNER PROFILE
There are 10 learner profile traits which describe a broad range of human capacities and responsibilities that go beyond academic success. This month we are spotlighting: Risk-taker: Students that are risk-takers approach uncertainty with forethought and determination; they work independently and cooperatively to explore new ideas and innovative strategies. They are resourceful and resilient in the face of challenges and change.
Mikel Sakwa, 10th grade, was nominated and voted for the month of April by staff as a student that shows what it takes to be a Risk-Taker. Mikel transferred to MacDowell mid-semester from Kenya. She missed most of the pre-instruction in strength and conditioning class and blindly wrote a workout plan. She has been killing it in the weight room, working out hard and independently, while also seeking and giving assistance to her peers. She has shown resilience in the face of change.
Great job Mikel!!
A shout out to the other nominees for this month’s Learner Profile are Nicholas Leofilos, Milan Hutcherson, and Jounte Harrison!!

COMMUNITY DAY for Middle and High School students – May 30th
What is Community Day? It is a special day for every 7th-12th grade student to engage in projects that provide service to our community – projects which are in alignment with our Service and Action goals of our Middle Years Program and our Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) goals of our Diploma Program. During this year’s Community Day students will be taking part in a number of different activities such as blanket making for the Humane Society, cleanup at local parks and on our school grounds, making sandwiches, and sorting items for homeless shelters. Selection will be the week of May 19th.
**Watch for communication on activities that are off-site which require a permission slip and may require a bagged lunch or money to purchase lunch. Some organizations may require a waiver for student participation.
ATTENTION JUNIORS: Class of 2026
Applying to a two-year or four-year college can seem complicated. But MPS, UWM and MATC have partnered to make the application and admission process simple and stress-free. Now you can apply to Milwaukee’s two largest colleges and 10 Universities of Wisconsin campuses in less than five minutes—no transcripts needed!
The Milwaukee Direct Admit and Direct Admit Wisconsin programs let all MPS high school juniors apply – for free – with just one five-minute form. The only information needed is the student’s name, their student ID and where they want to apply. After completing the form, students will hear from colleges in about a month regarding next steps and hear of acceptance in September 2025.
A parent/guardian will need to also assist with completing this form, the link to apply is here: https://mpsresearch.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_et7ARDn0H3lolhk

FAMILY GAME NIGHT
Thank you to all who joined the MacDowell community for an evening of family games on April 25th. We had a great turnout for BINGO in the hall and board games galore in the library. Ms. Heather called Bingo for the night with many participants striving for that snack bag prize. Ms. Mary hosted an Upper Elementary game room. Ms. Heidi supplied our snack bar to keep our Middle School assistants busy. Thank you to Ms. Amy for hanging out for the fun and visiting with families. Many new games were shared and classics enjoyed.
We hope to see you next year!
OPERA FOR THE YOUNG
Last month 30 of MacDowell students performed with the organization Opera for the Young in their production of The Magic Flute. Opera for the Young brings live, professional opera to school audiences. All productions are fully staged, sung in English and created especially for children. Students appear onstage in chorus and cameo roles. Classrooms and families enjoyed a lovely afternoon at the opera in MacDowell’s auditorium. Students have been studying opera and The Magic Flute songs in their elementary music classes over the past month. To learn more about Opera for the Young and see the programs they have to offer visit https://www.operafortheyoung.org/
