Programs

Milwaukee Sign Language School (MSLS) offers enriching programs that support our students’ academic and personal growth.

Mentoring

Mentoring is offered to students in grades six through eight. Mentors for middle school boys are provided through Own It Mentoring.

PEARLS

This weekly program for MSLS students supports youth identifying as girls in developing skills for their personal and professional growth. Participants enjoy enriching activities that build their confidence, support healthy relationships, and help them achieve their dreams. Students who are involved make more positive decisions, lead lives they can be proud of, and help build stronger, healthier communities.

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

To promote positive student behavior and improve learning, MPS uses a system of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).

PBIS is a three-tiered approach that begins by teaching expectations and encouraging collaboration and consistency in classrooms. Teachers and students co-design agreements and routines that align with three districtwide expectations: “Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible.” For students who need more support, higher tiers offer structure, interventions, and follow-up to address specific concerns.

After years of use, MPS and other districts across the country are reporting higher student achievement, improved school environments, and fewer classroom disruptions and student suspensions.

Redeveloped Schoolyard

Together with next-door Morse Middle School, our campus is the site of the largest green schoolyard redevelopment ever for MPS. The Reflo project on our shared grounds removed more than 191,000 square feet of asphalt to create a space the size of four to five typical green schoolyards. Our redesigned schoolyard provides natural areas for learning and play with multiple outdoor classrooms. (MSLS families and friends can hold picnics in the new green space, too!)
