Families

At Milwaukee Sign Language School (MSLS), we believe that parents serve as the first and most important educators in a child’s life.

Education begins at home, and our staff strives to build upon the basic foundation and values instilled in young learners before they attend school. Families are essential to children’s success both inside and outside the classroom. MSLS provides a variety of meetings, events, and activities for parents and guardians to be involved during the school year. This is critical to help children succeed academically and grow emotionally.

Parent Coordinator

This role is designed to help parents and guardians find information about our school and MPS. Danielle Eastern is the parent coordinator at MSLS.

School Engagement Council

School spirit and student enrichment are on the agenda for Parent Teacher Associations and Organizations districtwide. School policies, procedures, and student well-being are the work of School Engagement Councils, established in Milwaukee Public Schools in 1997.

The MSLS School Engagement Council brings together families, staff, students (when appropriate), and community members to support and inform shared leadership that can lead to increased student achievement.

Members of the council:

  • Analyze school climate, performance, and budgetary issues.
  • Advise school faculty and administration on matters affecting curriculum, student performance, and overall student well-being.

You can participate in our School Engagement Council as a voting member or guest. Email our parent coordinator at easterdn@milwaukee.k12.wi.us to suggest agenda topics for an upcoming meeting.

Student Support

Family participation is highly encouraged at MSLS.

Family involvement leads to improved test scores; higher self-esteem; and better grades, attendance, and behavior for children.

You can help your child succeed in school!

  • Make sure your child arrives at school on time every day (9:10 a.m.).
  • Call the MSLS attendance line at (414) 393-3860 when your child will be absent. We must be sure every student has arrived safely and follow up with anyone who is not there. We must also record absences correctly.
  • Ensure that your child gets at least nine hours of sleep every night.
  • Dress your child appropriately for the weather. Please tell us if your student needs outerwear.
  • Check your child’s backpack every day for homework or important messages.
  • Set aside a quiet space and time for homework. Help your child with assignments.
  • Read with your child every day.
  • Volunteer in the classroom.
  • Chaperone our field trips.
  • Attend the School Engagement Council (SEC) monthly meetings.

Volunteer Opportunities

Parents and guardians are encouraged to come to MSLS and help students and staff members. Combining support from home with support at school makes for positive results for our students! There are many ways to get involved at MSLS:

Athletic Coaches

Family members can serve as coaches for our athletic teams. This allows us to offer more opportunities for our students to get involved in sports. Find more information about the available athletic teams and what it takes to coach at MSLS.

Classroom Volunteers

Our teachers could always use help in their classrooms! Volunteers must plan with teachers before coming in to help.

Field Trip Chaperones

Teachers often ask parents and guardians to serve as chaperones on field trips. MSLS staff are very grateful for these valuable volunteers! All chaperones are given established procedures to provide structure and accountability and to keep students safe when they are away from school.

If you are interested in one of these volunteer opportunities at MSLS, please fill out the MPS Volunteer Application to get started.
