History

Over the last 100 years, Bay View High School has evolved into a modern campus with strong academics, career pathways, and athletic offerings.

Bay View High School began in September 1914 when seven teachers and 150 students entered our original space, a one-building barracks with no central heating. The barracks then expanded to a bungalow, and in 1922 they built the four-story brick building that we still use today.

The new building was a vast improvement over the wooden barracks, and later renovations modernized rooms and lighting. The East and West Study Halls were separated into one-story units that were later converted to classrooms, a library, and a little theater/conference center. In 1976, an addition was built that included a 1,200-seat spectator gym.

Activities

Girl’s Club (1914), Stage Crew (1924), and Art Club (1932) were among the early club offerings at Bay View. The Student Government Association (S.G.A.) was created during World War II, and our Redcat mascot was adopted in the early 1950s. Learn more about the extracurriculars we offer today.

Athletics

Early sports included basketball, cross country, football, swimming, and track. With the addition of new facilities in the 1970s, athletics increased in importance. Discover our current athletic opportunities.

The Oracle

In 1915, Bay View launched The Oracle, our school newspaper and literary magazine. Later evolving into an annual publication, The Oracle went on to earn national recognition. (In 1936, an Oracle reporter even interviewed Eleanor Roosevelt!)

School Evolution

Bay View was always a four-year high school except for when ninth graders attended Fritsche Junior High School from 1963 to 1977. In 2011, Fritsche briefly merged with Bay View High School to create Bay View Middle and High School. Our combined program ended in 2018, and our school is once again Bay View High School.

For a time, we served as the MPS specialty school for the Visual and Performing Arts. Over the years, we have focused on Law and Protective Services, Naval Junior ROTC, Mathematics/Science, and Construction. We currently offer STEAM classes and two distinguished NAF Academies.
