About

Since 1886, H.W. Longfellow School has reliably and responsively educated generations of Milwaukeeans in our historic Clarke Square neighborhood.

Just ask Principal Rosa Cerda (Longfellow School, Class of 1980). She can explain how the school has evolved to meet the needs of its K3-8 students, families, and a growing global workforce. Today’s Longfellow learner is inspired to solve problems, think critically, and contribute to class discussions and projects in daily lessons that combine biliteracy and mathematics. Older students sharpen their STEM skills in the Verizon Innovative Learning Lab. Every student learns to collaborate and create during weekly art, gym, and music classes. Teachers are licensed and certified experts in their subject areas. “Every teacher at Longfellow brings a wealth of resources into the classroom,” says Principal Cerda.

Longfellow’s high expectations, expert teachers, and parent volunteers contribute to a school-wide culture that prioritizes results and respect. Year after year, our students earn statewide recognition in math and literacy, and for following rules and routines that make our school a positive place to learn and grow. Even more impressive: Many students meet important academic milestones as bilingual learners. Meanwhile, their parents and caregivers make new friends and become volunteers in our Parent Resource Center, and during Homework Diners, Family Leadership Organization meetings , and cultural events. Many parents decide to send all their children to Longfellow, contributing to our school’s strong sense of community.

Please see for yourself. Neighbors and visitors are welcome to relax and refocus on Longfellow’s redeveloped schoolyard, where asphalt is out, and green space is in.
