Programs

Faculty at Starms Early Childhood Center integrate innovative and effective programs that keep class sizes small, establish and measure student-achievement goals so children can understand them, and strengthen school pride.

Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards (WMELS)

Based on research and supported by evidence-based practices, the Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards (WMELS) provide a framework for families, professionals, and policymakers to

  • Share a common language and responsibility for the well-being of children from birth to first grade;
  • Know and understand developmental expectations of young children; and
  • Understand the connection among the foundations of early childhood, K-12 educational experiences, and lifelong learning.

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

Positive Behavioral Interventions and SupportsTo improve student behavior and thus learning, Starms Discovery Learning Center uses the PBIS approach.

PBIS is shown to reduce classroom disruptions and the need for student discipline. PBIS is practiced throughout each school. It uses three tiers that begin by teaching expectations to all students and growing relationships with staff. For students who need more support, PBIS offers options at higher tiers to address specific concerns.

After years of use, districts across the country are reporting more positive school environments, fewer behavior problems, and increases in student achievement.

Achievement Gap Reduction (AGR) Program

The AGR program provides intensive academic and instructional support to Wisconsin schools working to close the achievement gap between kindergarten through third-grade students from low-income backgrounds and students in the same grade and subject statewide. Milwaukee Public Schools with AGR funding implement key strategies in their kindergarten through third-grade classrooms:

  • Small class sizes of 18:1 or 30:2
  • one−to−one tutoring provided by a licensed teacher
  • instructional coaching for teachers provided by a licensed teacher
