Who is Anna F. Doerfler?

In 1892, Anna Frances Doerfler became the first woman principal in Milwaukee Public Schools.

Born on April 24, 1867, and educated in Milwaukee, she became a teacher in 1887. Ms. Doerfler became the principal of Scott Street School in 1907. When the new building (our current facility) was erected in 1912, Ms. Doerfler escorted the entire student body of Scott Street School to their new educational environment. She remained principal of this building until her death in 1922. Later that year, the school’s name was changed to Anna F. Doerfler School, in recognition of her dedication as an educator.
