Reading Corps

Volunteer tutors work one on one with students in daily, 20-minute sessions.

SHARP Literacy

With support from SHARP Literacy, Doerfler elementary school students used their research, language and social studies skills to study four major holidays — Thanksgiving, Three Kings Day, Fourth of July and Day of the Dead — that are meaningful for the school’s predominantly Hispanic/Latino community. Milwaukee artist Sally Duback helped the students bring their holiday scenes to life. SHARP Literacy also guided Doerfler students in creating papers about the meaning of freedom and then using them to create images that became part of a mural installed at the Milwaukee County War Memorial.
