Families

Families are our most important partners at Anna F. Doerfler School.

Students perform better and enjoy school more when parents and guardians are involved.

Families are encouraged to set a time with teachers to visit their child’s classroom and discuss their child. Progress reports are sent home to parents and guardians. Conferences are held regularly to share each student’s progress. Teachers and staff are ready to help our families with extra meetings or reports. We would love to see you join your child at school events and activities.

Meet Our Parent Coordinator

Katherine Valentyn is the parent coordinator at Anna F. Doerfler School. The coordinator helps parents and guardians find information about our school and MPS. We believe that students do better socially and in the classroom when families take an active role in their child’s education.

We offer events and workshops geared toward families’ interests and needs. A family newsletter details school events, community events, and information about the school’s Learning Team and the School Engagement Council (SEC). Please keep the office updated with current phone numbers and address, so we can continue to provide you with all the information you need.

We encourage you to sign up for important updates from our Parent Coordinator Remind Group right on your phone.

On a smartphone, sign up for push notifications. Follow the instructions at the link to download the app, and sign up for Remind.

If you do not have a smartphone, get text notifications by texting @3014doer to the number 81010 or to (484) 241-4261.

Support Your Student

Family participation is highly encouraged at Doerfler School.
Family involvement leads to better grades, better attendance, improved test scores, higher self-esteem, and better behavior for children.

You can help your child succeed in school!

  • Make sure your child arrives at school on time every day (7:25 a.m.).
  • Call the Doerfler attendance line when your child will be absent, at (414) 902-9560. We must be sure every student has arrived safely and follow up with any who are absent. We must also record absences correctly.
  • Ensure that your child gets at least 9 hours of sleep every night.
  • Dress your child appropriately for the weather. Please tell us if your student needs a coat or other outerwear.
  • Check your child’s bookbag every day for homework or important messages.
  • Help your child with homework.
  • Read with your child every day.
  • Volunteer in the classroom.
  • Ask how you can join our field trips.
  • Attend the School Engagement Council (SEC) monthly meetings or the Family Leadership Organization (FLO) monthly meetings.
  • Sign up to receive messages from the district and from Doerfler School by texting the letter “Y” to 67587.

Helping Your Child with Homework

Your child’s teacher is happy to talk with you about the type of homework that is right for your child.

At home, have a quiet time and place for homework. Your child has access at home to the same online programs they use in class. Have your student log in through Clever to find the programs they use, including Smarty Ants, Enciclopedia Estudiantil Hallazgos, Sora, Discovery Education, and others.

Talk About Your Child’s Progress with Their Teachers

Attending parent-teacher conferences shows your child how much you support them. If your child’s scheduled conference time does not work for you, contact the teacher to choose a time to visit your student’s classroom, talk about their progress, and share ways to help your child learn.

Be sure to check your student’s bookbag every day for homework and important school messages. The staff sends home reports and schedules conferences regularly to monitor and ensure each student’s progress. If you would like more conferences, meetings or reports, please tell your child’s teacher.

Volunteer

Doerfler is committed to involving families in our school. Parents and guardians are encouraged to find out how to assist teachers in their classrooms and at our events and outings. This allows children to see their family and school working together for them.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact our Parent Coordinator at (414) 902-9540 to find out more.
