MPS proposed 2024–25 budget is focused on students, staff supports, and efficient use of resources

From Milwaukee Public Schools

On Friday, April 26, 2024, Milwaukee Public Schools released its proposed budget for the 2024–25 school year. The approximately $1.47 billion budget shifts more money directly to students, with 95 cents of every dollar being directed toward classrooms.

“This budget positions MPS for long-term success. We are maximizing resources to enhance student achievement; providing more direct support to schools through increased per-pupil funding; reorganizing district offices to place more staff in schools; and reducing spending to close a budget gap,” said MPS Superintendent Dr. Keith P. Posley.

The following significant budget changes are proposed for 2024–25.

  • A shift in resources from Central Services to schools
  • Added money for tutoring
  • Added money for dual enrollment programs, which allow students to earn college credits while still in high school
  • More resources to sustain art, music, physical education, and library media
  • Continuation of the MPS Virtual Program (MVP)
  • Increased efficiencies, including a move to one calendar for the entire district

The public can view the proposed budget at mpsmke.com/budget. It will be presented to the Milwaukee Board of School Directors Committee on Strategic Planning and Budget on Tuesday, May 7, at 5:30 p.m.

Members of the public can comment on the document at board and committee meetings throughout the month of May. Instructions for public testimony can be found on the Board webpage. Meetings will take place in the Central Services Auditorium, 5225 W. Vliet St., Milwaukee.
