About

Part of Milwaukee’s historical and culture-rich East Side neighborhood, Maryland Avenue Montessori School relies on Montessori philosophy and community connections to educate its 500 students from K3 through eighth grade.

Campus gardens and new outdoor play areas connect students to nature and play. Primary classrooms welcome three- to five-year-olds who develop independence while learning early math and literacy skills. Elementary students explore local and global cultures and natural phenomena like volcanic eruptions and photosynthesis. Secondary classrooms bring seventh and eighth graders together for project-based work and independent study to prepare for high-school. Working through Montessori’s occupations, microeconomies, and humanities curricula, our oldest students are leaders and entrepreneurs who run the campus coffee shop, grow and sell organic plants, and operate an after-school snack-and-crafts cart.

Family is the foundation of Maryland Avenue Montessori School, whose population includes many siblings and neighborhood families. Parents lead the engagement council, are full-time teachers or part-time coaches, and care for campus gardens during the summer. There is a club or organization for every student. Neighborhood businesses welcome Maryland students as volunteers and researchers. Nurturing the whole child is truly a community endeavor at Maryland Avenue Montessori School.
