Special Weekly E, 10/31/2025
Dear MPS Community,
We are one day away from 700,000 people in Wisconsin losing access to food benefits under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) due to the federal government shutdown. No one in our community should go hungry, and Milwaukee Public Schools is looking at all options to support our students, families, and staff.
- First, the district will continue to provide free breakfast and lunch to all our students. In September, we served more than 550,000 breakfasts and 860,000 lunches. We expect that number will grow if SNAP benefits end. The MPS Department of Nutrition Services is prepared for the potential increase in meals.
- Students in after-school programs run by Milwaukee Recreation as well as our Community Learning Center (CLC) and Safe Place partners will continue to receive after-school snacks and dinners.
- This week, we joined the city, county, Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, the Milwaukee Bucks, faith partners, and others in launching an emergency food drive. All MPS schools are donation sites, and we are working to distribute donation boxes.
If any Maryland Avenue Montessori families are in need of specific support, please contact Brianna Laux-Kocis, Maryland Social Worker, at 414-906-4831 or [email protected] for additional resources and individualized support.
