Supporting students’ academic performance, classroom engagement, college and career goals, and overall well-being are the focus of these evidence-based programs in place at Milwaukee French Immersion School:
Black & Latino Male Achievement
The Department of Black & Latino Male Achievement collaboratively works to improve the outcomes of Black and Latino male students within Milwaukee Public Schools by challenging systems, structures, and spaces of oppression, and seeks to create conditions that promote greater success.
Danceworks Mad Hot Rhythm
Danceworks Mad Hot Rhythm inspires our students to move their bodies and work together to create performing art. Participation in Mad Hot Rhythm helps our students boost their self-confidence and creativity, respect and work well with others, and learn that creative movement feels great!
Junior Achievement of Wisconsin
We have a strong partnership with the Junior Achievement of Wisconsin program, which inspires and prepares young people to succeed in a global economy. Junior Achievement of Wisconsin provides activities, guides, thought leadership and other resources to support age-appropriate learning about leadership, careers, finances, and more. Lessons are organized according to the Milwaukee Public Schools Social Studies curriculum and are implemented in K5 classrooms, continuing through fifth grade at Milwaukee French Immersion School.
Concordia Language Villages
Fifth graders immerse themselves in French language and culture during their weeklong stay at Concordia Language Villages’ Lac du Bois site on Turtle River Lake near Bemidji, Minnesota.
Florentine Opera
This program brings a fully costumed and staged children’s opera to schools, libraries, and other organizations. Of our school partners, up to 15 schools receive multi-visit performance preparation, and take part in the show to an audience of their peers.
Milwaukee Art Museum Junior Docent School Program
Students in the third through fifth grades explore the visual arts during 10 visits to the Milwaukee Art Museum, learning vocabulary, history and developing cultural and historical awareness of different art styles and disciplines. Students complete their personalized, three-year course of study by selecting, researching, and presenting on a favorite item from the museum’s collection and earning “Junior Docent” status.
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
Milwaukee Public Schools uses PBIS to promote positive student behavior. After years of use, districts across the country – MPS included – are reporting increases in student achievement, more positive school environments, and fewer classroom disruptions and disciplinary referrals.
PBIS uses a three-tiered approach. Tier one teaches expectations to all students and promotes collaboration and consistency in the classroom: Teachers and students co-design agreements and routines that align with school expectations. Tiers two and three provide structure, interventions, and follow up for students who need more support.
STARBASE
STARBASE Wisconsin is an interactive academic program that helps youth increase their knowledge in STEM. Fifth grade students are taken on a five-week odyssey into the exciting world of the sciences though hands-on activities and experiments, technology projects, and interaction with professionals in STEM fields. The US Department of Defense has funded STARBASE programs around the country for over 20 years. As the largest employer of civilian and military scientists and engineers, the DoD recognizes the importance of inspiring students to pursue STEM fields. STARBASE Wisconsin is located on 51st and Silver Spring Drive, and we are proudly sponsored by the Wisconsin Air National Guard.
Piano Arts
A popular curriculum-based general music program, Music Explorers will help students to become better listeners, develop vocabulary, and write about what they hear. Sessions include three in-school classes by a teaching artist, a fellow’s classroom visit, and a Youth Concert presented by the fellow with a “Spotlight Performer,” a local singer or instrumentalist, and a writing challenge.
United Nations Schools of International Learning
Fourth and fifth grade students develop research, writing, and presentation skills while studying world affairs and current events in this landmark program, which offers a combined Model UN/World Studies curriculum to more than a dozen Milwaukee Public Schools.
