Tutoring

Reading Corps

Reading Corps has been recognized by the Library of Congress for best practices in promoting literacy. Here at Hopkins Lloyd Community School (HLCS), Reading Corps provides volunteer tutors who work one-on-one with our students who need extra help with their reading skills. Daily, 20-minute sessions keep students engaged and allow tutors to track their progress and achieve their goals.

Walnut Way

HLCS is partnering with Dea Wright, director of the City of Milwaukee’s Office of Early Childhood Initiatives (OECI), and Walnut Way/Lindsay Heights Neighborhood Improvement District No. 12 to provide literacy tutoring school-wide. These partners will read books in classrooms, provide one-on-one tutoring in reading skills, and build relationships between teachers and students. They will also monitor students’ progress and partner with teachers to create capable and eager readers.

W.I.N. Intervention Blocks

All MPS schools screen students three times a year to see who needs extra support. At Hopkins Lloyd Community School, daily W.I.N. (What I Need) time offers help in reading and math, either one on one or in small groups.
